Basic Facts of the White-tailed deer…..

White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus):

  • • Most widely distributed species of deer in N. America
  • • Many subspecies
  • • Considerable variation in size across its range
  • • Northern males > 137 kg (280 lbs.)
  • • Endangered key deer male ~ 36 kg (80 lbs.)
  • • Prior to European settlement ~ 23-40 million
  • • Currently ~15 million
  • • 2 million harvested annually
  • • Range has expanded with habitat alteration
  • • Habitat
  • • Temperate to tropics; semi-arid to rainforest
  • • Prefer edge, open woodland, brushland, oldfield, and agricultural areas
  • • Food
  • • Browsers – leaves, twigs, and shoots of herbaceous vegetation, acorns and other mast, berries, mushrooms, and lichen
  • • Antlers – males only
  • • Shed each year in late winter/spring
  • • Re-grow by late summer/early fall
  • • Reproduction
  • • Rut (breeding season) occurs in fall
  • • If not inseminated, females will come into heat several times at 21-30 day intervals
  • 1 to 3 offspring after ~200 day gestation period
