Rocky Mountain National Park: Elk Montage

Basic facts of the Elk…..

  • • Once common in most of the U.S. (west of a line from NY to GA)
  • • Currently restricted to areas (often mountainous) within the western states
  • • Reintroduced populations farther east
  • • Free-ranging elk in Texas in Guadalupe Mtns. and other mountains in southwest
  • • Size – Males: 178-497 kg (1095 lbs.); Females: 171-292 kg (645 lbs)
  • • Food – similar to other deer
  • • Antlers – males only (up to 40 lbs.)
  • • Elk have upper canines
  • • Reproduction:
  • • Fall rut (September/October)
  • • Single young born in June (twinning is rare)
  • • Males bugle
