Black bears, freezing film-makers, and boxing elk

We are almost finished with our first “official” trip to film for our PBS series and while we are exhausted be are loving the time in the field.  We have seen a lot on this trip and put together a short video of what we’ve seen and of our living conditions on the trip.  Hope you enjoy…Ray and Jessie

Black Bear Basics……

American black bear (Ursus americanus):

  • • Widely distributed across Canada, AK, and the mountainous west
  • • Only bear found in eastern forests
  • • Various habitats from tundra to southern swamps
  • • Fierce reputation – only 36 human deaths in ~100 years
  • • For every person killed by black bears, more than 60 are killed by domestic dogs!
  • • Highly variable pelage colors – black, white, bluish-gray, brown, cinnamon, and blond
  • • Omnivorous – mostly plant material
  • • Size – M: 47-409 kg (900 lbs.); F: 39-236 kg (520 lbs.)
